The Biblical Law of Effectiveness and Domestic Abuse

What is domestic abuse?

Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse is physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person.
God never intended for his creation to rule and reign over one another because mankind is made in his image and likeness.
Genesis 1:26- 27 reads then God said, "Let Us make man in our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Ruling over another person denies a God given right to exercise free choice. Man is a free moral agent given the right to choose by God that even he does not violate.

Rest! A Key to Mercy and Effective Ministry

Matthew 15:22- And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.
In this particular story we observe that a woman came to Jesus to plead for mercy on behalf of her daughter because she was grievously vexed by a devil (Matt.15:22). Demons are restless and they seek rest by walking through dry places and when they cannot find it, return to possess the body they were forced to leave...
Matthew 12:43-44 - When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
There is neither rest for the daughter or the loving mother who is desperately concerned about her daughter. The loving mother exhibits mercy to her daughter by going to Jesus on her behalf. Some problems must be taken to Jesus in prayer on behalf of those who may not be in the condition to do so for themselves. This woman was effective in ministry for her daughter because both mercy and rest was the final result for both. Her faith and persistence got the much needed miracle. Verse 28 declares Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28 to come unto him all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest which is what this mother did.
Practical Points -
In this life we will have problems that only Jesus can solve so we must be willing to take them to him in prayer.
People who are tired may not show mercy. The Disciples in contrast did not show mercy to this woman ( vs 23) - And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
We can always trust a loving God to show mercy on our behalf.
Don't allow others to distract or hinder your pursuit of receiving your answer.
There is no rest in anything influenced by darkness.
Jesus knows better than we will ever know what we need.

Benefits of Waiting

Human nature has a way of quickly forgetting the value of special things. The value that a bride and groom have and feel for each other as they prepare to walk down the isle to say their special vows. The value that a married couple places on their first newborn child and even the college career that took years of hard work to complete. The truth is a person will put their best foot forward in obtaining a long awaited goal but may relax with an I have finally arrived attitude. Accomplishing something is not the time to relax, but a time to begin a new level of achievement to appreciate and keep what has been obtained. The constant attitude of setting goals and moving forward brings a level of honor and respect needed to appreciate what has been presently accomplished. Something that is given instead of laboring for can bring with it the possibility of losing its value because appreciation is linked to thanksgiving a Godly characteristic admonished in Gods word to never be without. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 declares In every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. God wants us to never forget what he does for us on a daily basis so in His love will allow periods of waiting during certain seasons of

life so we will appreciate all of those wonderful things that he does. By waiting I mean withholding certain things we may want at present until a later time so we will value and appreciate them when they do arrive.

The Biblical Law of Effectiveness works within the confines of purpose for Marriage

Genesis 2:24 - Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
God’s purpose for companionship and effective relationship is leaving and cleaving. Cleaving can only be complete when spouses leave their parents.
To cleave means to - to cling, stick, stay close, cleave, keep close, stick to, stick with, follow closely, join to, overtake, catch

Ephesians 5:25 - Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
God’s purpose for marriage is that Husbands model Christ love for the Church toward their wives. This includes – Being willing to view things from the wife’s perspective. Jesus came down from Heaven so he could be identified with his bride the church and by doing so became able to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15).
Being willing to lay down his life for his wife - This not only means to protect her but to also be willing to give up ones desires and aspirations if they cause conflict with her needs and desires. “Christ set this example in the garden of Gethsemane becoming obedient to death when he declared not my will but thine be done” It’s putting her before oneself. Christ laid down his life for his bride the Church.
Being faithful – Christ faithfulness to his bride remains even after his ascension to be seated at the right hand of the Father. He ever lives to make intercession for his bride (Hebrews 7:25)
Being Patient – Christ is never impatient with his bride (1 Corinthians 13)
Being a servant - For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. Some husbands have the idea that their wives are to serve them 24 hours a day.

The Effectiveness of a Worry Free Life

Think of what it would be like to live in a world where there were no worries! Peace would be everywhere, for example doors could be kept open without the fear of people entering in uninvited, job security would not be an issue because one would always be financially secure, there would be no need to fear death because protection would always be close. The reality is we live in an imperfect world where a worry free live does not take the place of wisdom, but an effective worry free life is possible "because" of wisdom. In John 16:33 Jesus declared in the world you shall have tribulation but be of good cheer for I have overcome the world.

Notice Jesus does not deny the possibilities for worry because we live in a troubled world, but the more wise and effective way is to trust him in every situation to work all things together for good (Romans 8:28). He says be of good cheer which means a cheerful joyful attitude should take the place of a worry because of what he accomplished in this same world. Jesus life was filled with trouble but he did not worry but simply trusted His Father and he was effective in everything that he did. Well of course that's because he is Jesus one might say, But believers have also been admonished not to worry.

Philippians 4:6-7
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Matthew 6:34
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

John 14:14
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. ... And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also ...
Notice in each case the believer has been commanded to not worry and God would never issue a command without his ability to carry it out because it would be unjust. Yes even though this is easier said than done, but we can strive for and have an Effective worry free life!
